The second and third Sonine coefficients of a freely cooling granular gas revisited

چکیده
In its simplest statistical-mechanical description, a granular fluid can be modeled as composed of smooth inelastic hard spheres (with a constant coefficient of normal restitution α) whose velocity distribution function obeys the Enskog-Boltzmann equation. The basic state of a granular fluid is the homogeneous cooling state, characterized by a homogeneous, isotropic, and stationary distribution of scaled velocities, F(c). The behavior of F(c) in the domain of thermal velocities (c ∼ 1) can be characterized by the two first non-trivial coefficients (a2 and a3) of an expansion in Sonine polynomials. The main goals of this paper are to review some of the previous efforts made to estimate (and measure in computer simulations) the α-dependence of a2 and a3, to report new computer simulations results of a2 and a3 for two-dimensional systems, and to investigate the possibility of proposing theoretical estimates of a2 and a3 with an optimal compromise between simplicity and accuracy.

Granular Gas of Viscoelastic Particles in a Homogeneous Cooling State
Kinetic properties of a granular gas of viscoelastic particles in a homogeneous cooling state are studied analytically and numerically. We employ the most recent expression for the velocity-dependent restitution coefficient for colliding viscoelastic particles, which allows to describe systems with large inelasticity. In contrast to previous studies, the third coefficient a3 of the Sonine polyn...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of a granular binary mixture from a modified Sonine approximation
We evaluate in this work the hydrodynamic transport coefficients of a granular binary mixture in d dimensions. In order to eliminate the observed disagreement (for strong dissipation) between computer simulations and previously calculated theoretical transport coefficients for a monocomponent gas, we obtain explicit expressions of the seven Navier-Stokes transport coefficients with the use of a...
متن کاملBreakdown of the Sonine expansion for the velocity distribution of Granular Gases
– The velocity distribution of a granular gas is analyzed in terms of the Sonine polynomials expansion. We derive an analytical expression for the third Sonine coefficient a3. In contrast to frequently used assumptions this coefficient is of the same order of magnitude as the second Sonine coefficient a2. For small inelasticity the theoretical result is in good agreement with numerical simulati...
متن کاملM ar 2 00 2 Granular Gases - the early stage
We investigate the evolution of the velocity distribution function of a granular gas composed of viscoelastic particles in the homogeneous cooling state, i.e. before clustering occurs. The deviation of the velocity distribution function from the Maxwellian distribution is quantified by a Sonine polynomials expansion. The first non-vanishing Sonine coefficient a2(t), reveals a complex time depen...
متن کاملTransport coefficients of a granular gas of inelastic rough hard spheres.
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic and rough hard spheres is considered as a model of a dilute granular gas. In this model, the collisions are characterized by constant coefficients of normal and tangential restitution, and hence the translational and rotational degrees of freedom are coupled. A normal solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained by means of the Chapman-Enskog method for st...
